The wait is finally over. Microsoft is finally launching Office 2016 for Mac.

The latest versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and OneNote are now available to Office 365 subscribers, the company announced Thursday. Although early versions of the updated Office suite were available during a preview period earlier this year, the official rollout marks Microsoft's first major update to the Office lineup for Mac in years.

Included are redesigned versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint, first revealed in the Office 2016 for Mac preview in March, as well as revamped versions of Outlook and OneNote. All of the apps have been optimized for Mac users, including support for multitouch gestures, Retina displays and full-screen capabilities.

If you signed up for the Office 2016 for Mac preview, then you won't likely see many major changes with its official release. Microsoft received more than 100,000 pieces of feedback from early testers, which helped inform many of the tweaks made in Thursday's update, Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice-president of Office 365 client applications, wrote in a blog post.

In addition, Microsoft said Mac users will no longer have to wait years between Office upgrades (until now, the last major refresh to the Office suite was in 2011). The company plans to "release updates and new features for Office 365 customers at least once per quarter," Koenigsbauer wrote.

Microsoft said it will offer a "one-time purchase option" in September for those who want a perpetual license for the software. Existing subscribers can get the update from their Office account.
