Microsoft Sends Invites to Sept. 23 Surface 2 Event

Microsoft has asked members of the press to save the date for the launch of its next-generation Surface tablets.

The invitations -- which are designed within what looks like a Surface device -- reveal a Sept. 23 launch date in New York City.

Although we don't know for sure what will be revealed, it's safe to say we will likely see updated versions of both the Surface and the Surface Pro tablets (appropriately named the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2). The Pro is expected to get an upgrade that will be lighter, thinner and include an Intel Haswell processor. It's also rumored to have an improved battery life.

Meanwhile, the Surface 2 is said to ship with Windows RT 8.1, but there's a good chance the "RT" name will be no longer. Other rumored specs include a 1080p display and a Nvidia Tegra 4 processor.
