LONDON -- A photographer in Scotland has captured the mesmerising majesty of the Northern Lights without even trying.

Maciej Winiarczyk set up a timelapse on the banks of Loch More in Caithness to record the apparent movements of the Milky Way as the earth rotated, and returned to find his camera lit up with luminous flashes.

The Aurora Borealis - often such an elusive phenomenon to Lights hunters - flashed across the screen to the surprise of Winiarczyk.
