Minti, the social network for parents that's been in beta for the past five months, lost the beta label and launched officially this week. The site is owned by Vibe Capital of Perth, Australia, who raised $1.2 million in funding earlier this year. Vibe plans to license its technology to other web community start-ups, and launch more niche social networks in the future.

I've been testing Minti since about February, and it's a nice effort. Members have profile pages with an About Me section, photos, messaging, tags, recent activity and the the ability to import entries from an external blog via RSS. You can also add friends to your network, choose a custom avatar and receive awards for your contributions to the site. However, Minti is more of a content site that a pure social network: users post articles about parenting, while others can rate them, tag them, post comments or add the articles to their favorites. It's like a cross between Wikipedia and a group blog. You can rank articles by recency, popularity and number of views, or find articles that have been added since your last login. Other features include groups, forums and a question and answer section along the lines of Yahoo Answers.

In the past, Minti's problem has been that it's a very closed community. They've fixed that by adding RSS and the ability to import external blogs, but things like blog/MySpace widgets or their own Digg-clone (for external news sources) would make sense, too.
