Smaato, makers of the Smaato Open Mobile Advertising (SOMA) platform, has raised $3.5 million in its Series A round of funding.

The San Mateo, California-based company is looking to bring advertising to mobile phones running on JAVA, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Palm’s OS. The company has also lined up an impressive list of clients that includes the likes of Allianz, Toyota, Microsoft, Mercedes-Benz, Martini, and Weekly Intouch.

“We are convinced Smaato is at the fore front of this new marketing opportunity," said Uwe R. Feuersenger, CEO of Aeris Capital AG, who participated in the funding. He went on to say, "Mobile advertising will be in hyper growth mode for the coming years and we believe Smaato is one of the leading pioneers in this field with an experienced management team and an excellent track record in the recent past. We will be actively supporting Smaato to position the company as a leader in the mobile advertising space."
