Mobile advertising will account for the vast majority of growth in the global ad market in the next four years, according to a report released by eMarketer.

A new projection highlights the importance of digital devices in the world's advertising industry, the growth of which is projected to come primarily through mobile phones. Of the more than $150 billion in global ad market growth projected through 2018, $118 billion will come via mobile, according to eMarketer's new projections released Wednesday.

[seealso slug=http://sale-online.click/2014/11/17/mobile-email-etiquette/%5D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat growth means mobile spending will soon become the dominant digital ad segment in all major markets.

The growth of smartphone usage has coincided with a sharp rise in mobile Internet traffic. Mobile device use already surpassed PCs in terms of Internet usage earlier this year.

Where the consumers go, advertisers follow. Desktop still matters, but is set to be eclipsed in ad spending by mobile by 2017, according to the eMarketer data. China is projected to grow significantly in the next five years to $57.2 billion in mobile spending, although the U.S. is slated to still top in absolute numbers ($83 billion in digital ad spending in 2018).

Coinciding with the new data, eMarketer has also released its new interactive guide to world ad spending, highlighting the growth in various markets and segments throughout the world.

Google and Facebook are nicely positioned to take advantage of the shift to mobile. The two companies account for around two-thirds of mobile ad spending (47% for Google and 22% for Facebook).
