Mochibag Aims to Reinvent the Drawstring Backpack

Drawstring backpacks haven't changed much over the years, but now one Chicago-based company believes it has developed a superior design for the bag.

Mochibags are designed to address common issues with traditional drawstring backpacks: difficult openings and drawstrings that can become uneven or unbalanced. As explained in the video, above, Mochibag has lower anchor points for each drawstring, meaning the cords will likely stay balanced.

Mochibag contents are also more accessible: Handles on the side can be used to pull the bag open and closed.

It might sound like a simple solution to a simple problem, but it's an issue that apparently resonates with consumers. The demand for this improved drawstring bag has been large: As of Monday night, Mochibags' Kickstarter project has already surpassed its $10,000 goal, earning more than $72,000 in pledges -- and there's still 18 days left in the campaign. A limited number of Mochibags are available for backers at a $25 pledge.

The U.S.-made bag will come in a white, navy and black. It will also be available in special editions that include leather straps and brass or chrome finishes. What's more, there are "adventure" editions that include eight feet of parachute cord for those outdoor experiences.

In 2011, the creators unsuccessfully tried to raise $5,000 on Kickstarter for an earlier version of Mochibag. The company said it's developed 39 prototypes since the last project to get to its current version.
