When cash starts flying (literally), people go crazy.

Motorists driving along I-270 near Urbana, Maryland, lost their minds Friday morning when they witnessed what many people dream of: money flying everywhere.

At approximately 8 a.m. ET, a malfunctioning door of an armored vehicle owned by Canada-based company GardaWorld led to a bag of cash falling onto the highway, the Washington Post reported. Initially, the incident was thought to be a crash that involved an armored vehicle.

Flying money has a tendency to impair people's judgement, and many motorists stopped their vehicles to collect the cash. Police said that so many vehicles stopped to collect the dough that traffic in the northbound lanes was at a standstill.

The amount of money that fell off the vehicle is still unknown, but it is only believed to have been about $500. Greg Shipley, a spokesperson with the state police, said "there wasn't much to pick up" by the time troopers made it to the scene.

Responders were only able to recover $200 from the highway, and are asking those who took the cash to return it.

“Sorry, folks; it is not your money,” Shipley said. “If you picked it up and turn it in, you’re being a good citizen.”

Otherwise, the cash collectors may be looking at a theft charge. Shipley said investigators are looking into those who took off with the cash, and will be assessing footage from traffic cameras.

There were no photos available of the event -- probably because people were too distracted by the money that was flying around. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
