Video site Motionbox is teaming up with Capitol Music Group to launch yet another promo.

This time, the band Placebo wants users to submit clips of themselves singing Running Up That Hill. Entries are open until April 13th, and all the clips will be put together to form a video montage, which will become the official music video. Fans will also be able to download the instrumental and lyrics for practice, and it seems that the first 1000 submissions will get included.

So online contests and promotions are big in 2007 - we've confirmed that. Why? Two reasons, I'd say: buzz and sponsorship. Contests tend to get media coverage, and more mentions in blogs and newspapers means higher probability of future partnerships, investment and other deals. Second, online contests often provide a revenue stream, particularly if a big-name sponsor can be found (ie. Cingular sponsoring YouTube Underground).
