Since launching Monday, the site has broken Avatar and The Dark Knight into short, multi-image animations. GIF versions of Transformers, Inception and The Hangover will roll out Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But why?

"We turned movies into GIFs in order to push the format of the GIF blog to one absurdly logical conclusion," Idle Screenings co-creator Mitch Trale told Mashable on Tuesday. "We've spent a lot of time browsing these kinds of blogs. ... There's a disposability to a single GIF when seen in the context of a blog full of them, yet that GIF can still retain a power to evoke feelings or memories of a shared media experience."

Trale and Jacob Broms Engblom launched Idle Screenings to look at three types of content delivery: GIF blogs, screensavers and presentations. Movie sequences in their GIF blogs are presented in chronological order, unlike other GIF blogs that display GIFs out of order from various movies and TV shows.

"We built these blogs in order to contextualize these GIFs with themselves, where they can suggest their original, familiar narratives, but where they can also fall out of sync with their stories, as they load and loop at different rates," Trale explained.

The site won't be updated after March 9.

GIFs in general have become a popular vehicle to showcase notable moments of 2012. In January, a GIF of comedian Tina Fey photobombing Amy Poehler during the Golden Globes went viral. And in February, popular Super Bowl GIFs captured the best moments of the game, halftime show and commercials.
