This "MySpace for..." tag is becoming clichéd, but frankly Fanspot is exactly that. The site, which launched at the end of July, reports around 1800 registered users and is owned by Beckett Media LP, a Texas-based sports publishing company.

First off, the site is unquestionably ugly. If you thought MySpace was pushing the bounds of ugly design, take a look at Fanspot's blue and orange color scheme, the pages aligned way over to the left and the huge banner ads - what's more, it takes about 3 pageloads to complete a task that should take one, and pages sometimes fail to load at all.

Fanspot joins Takkle, SportsMates and NHL Connect in the "MySpace for Sports" category, and I think it stacks up pretty well. Despite being one of the worst-designed sites you'll ever see, it gives virtually all the control to the user. If there's anything we've learned about MySpace, it's that the content comes first - and Fanspot gives users absolute freedom to create whatever they want. I've no idea whether they'll survive, but this is one site that you shouldn't judge by its cover.
