The puzzling 1990s PC game Myst is on its way to becoming a television series, according to a Tuesday report.

Legendary Television & Digital is set to develop the series, which follows the game's mysterious Stranger as he uncovers an island full of puzzles, Deadline reports.

Myst was originally released in 1993 for Mac, and later PC, and became one of the best-selling games on Mac for nearly a decade. It was then ported to the Sega Saturn, 3DO, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. It also became an iOS game last year (iTunes link).

The first-person puzzle game follows The Stranger -- the player, in other words -- around a serene yet enigmatic island. It was followed up by a sequel, Riven, in 1997.

A representative for Myst creator Cyan Games told Deadline the project is "finally being able to express in a visual linear medium the rich story that the Myst franchise is dripping with."

Mashable reached out to Legendary, which said it doesn't comment on projects currently in development.
