Music subscription service Napster is set to offer music on AT&T for $1.99 a track. The service will allow customers to download tracks over the air, thus competing with similar services from Verizon and Sprint Nextel. There is also of course the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, where AT&T customers with iPhones or the iPod Touch can already download music for 99 cents a track wherever there is a Wi-Fi connection. AT&T plans to roll out several new phones next month that will include the Napster service.

Napster, who recently introduced a web-based service instead of requiring a client download, does appear to be stuck in a game of follow the leader at the moment. However, the moves are necessary if the company has any hopes of surviving in an increasingly crowded music download market.
