This cover of this month’s National Geographic features a unique way to look at U.S. national parks: a whole day at once. Shot by acclaimed commercial and fine art photographer Stephen Wilkes, who has previously used this signature method to photograph landmarks around the world, each photo is a composite showcasing the same gorgeous view from different hours of the day.

Wilkes describes the style as “compressing the best parts of a day and night into a single photograph.”

The magazine cover story that uses his photos is just one part of National Geographic’s yearlong, multi-platform series celebrating a century of the National Parks Service titled "The Power of Parks.” 2016 marks the centennial of the U.S. National Park Service.
