Now that the post-holiday blues have set in, and the weather is getting cold and slushy, there's nothing quite as comforting as settling in for a long weekend of reading.
We hope you will make #timetoread on National Readathon Day 1/24. Need book ideas? http://t.co/tlFMfWcMX9 pic.twitter.com/6ivsml4uzz— Penguin Random House (@PenguinRH_News) January 13, 2015
Instead of enjoying a book alone, though, join one of the many readathon gatherings happening across the United States. Bookstores, high schools and libraries across the country are opening up their doors, and inviting people to cozy up and read. The first-ever National Readathon Day is on Jan. 24, 2015, and takes place from noon to 4 p.m., local time. Mashable has partnered with the National Book Foundation, Penguin Random House and Goodreads to encourage people to slow down, disconnect, pick up a book and raise money for the National Book Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to bringing books to communities in need, as well as fostering a lifelong love of reading.
Mashable will be hosting a readathon party at our headquarters in New York City, so RSVP, here, if you want to attend. We'll have a quiet area set up for anyone who wants to dig into their book, but we'll also have an area set up for those who want to socialize and discuss good reads. In addition, we'll be coordinating a book swap, so if you want to participate, bring a book you'd like to trade for something else.
National Readathon Day has raised over $12,000 for our educational programs! Join us in making #TimeToRead here: http://t.co/7yOyF5gozp— nationalbook (@nationalbook) January 13, 2015
And if you want to set up your own fundraising page to pitch in, simply set up an account on firstgiving.com.
Follow along, and join the conversation by using the hashtag #timetoread; then head over to your favorite local bookstore to pick up a book to enjoy next weekend.
What will you do on 1/24? I'll be making #timetoread & would love your support & to make your own page! @nationalbook http://t.co/IbO2k9HE73— Katie Freeman (@foxyhedgehog) January 14, 2015
