NBC 10 has promised to assign one reporter to use the station's Foursquare account to report on a lead news story each day. He or she will check in upon arrival at the event location and provide regular updates as the story develops. NBC 10 plans to expand this type of coverage with multiple news events per day, and by rolling out individual reporter accounts.
Whether this kind of reporting will be effective is highly questionable: After all, one would have to be following the NBC 10 account as well as check in at the location of the story to get updates (in which case, one could probably watch the story unfold oneself).
The real value, says Social Media Editor Lou Dubois, is the map of past coverage NBC 10 will develop. Followers might appreciate, for instance, checking into a cafe and learning that a fire had occurred next door some months earlier. The station does not plan to cross-post Foursquare checkins to Facebook or Twitter, which could potentially enhance coverage on those platforms with an "on the scene" feel.
