Both apps, which are called NBC Olympics Live Extra and NBC Olympics, are available for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and some Android devices.

The Live Extra app will provide streaming coverage of every competition in every sport -- more than 3,500 hours of live video and 302 medal competitions, all told. The NBC Olympics app, meanwhile, will complement that with stats and results, athlete profiles, highlight packages, written content and social interaction components.

Both apps were completely built and powered by Adobe. Jeremy Helfand, Adobe's vice president of monetization, said the apps were designed to appeal to sports fans with an increasingly high level of coverage demands.

"What consumers can expect with these is that, if they want to tune into a live event for the Olympics, they'll be able to gain access to that content on their mobile device," he told Mashable. "And not only can they access the great content they want, but it will be enhanced by background features and being able to interact on social media with their friends."

Not anyone can access all of the thousands of hours of streaming coverage, however -- they only work in the United States and you must be a subscriber of a verified cable, satellite or telco service, and pay for a video tier including both CNBC and MSNBC. But, if you meet those requirements, simply download the Live Extra app, select the Touch Here & Get Ready option, then enter your cable login credentials. Repeat that for each device you plan to watch on.

The companion app includes trivia, polls, bios and other content synced to the events being broadcast on NBC, and connects to Facebook and Twitter for conversation among friends.
