The shakeup at NBC Nightly News is official.

Andrew Lack has returned to the company to serve as the chairman of NBC News, replacing Pat Fili-Krushel, who is moving to a role on the executive team of NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke. The moves comes three weeks after NBC's suspension of Brian Williams for six months.

The move, which had been anticipated since word of negotiations between Lack and NBC emerged earlier this week, was all but definite after he left his role as CEO the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

This development has been seen as a positive one for Brian Williams; Lack and Williams are known to be close.

Burke announced the move in a memo to staff on Friday that was also sent to reporters. In it, he notes that Deborah Turness, president of NBC News, will report to Lack. There had been some expectation that her role was also in jeopardy.

Lack will oversee the NBC News and MSNBC operations, but not those at CNBC.

Lack, who previously served as president of NBC News from 1993 to 2001, spent time as chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music and later as CEO of Bloomberg Media Group. Rumors of his return to NBC was first reported by Variety earlier this week.

The Brian Williams debacle was seen by some as the final straw for NBC's news division. Other previous controversies -- most notably Ann Curry's tearful exit and David Gregory's bungled removal -- had already led to questions about the division's leadership.

In addition, NBC News has also struggled to maintain ratings for its major programs, including for Nightly News, Meet the Press and Today. MSNBC's ratings have also suffered.

Lack now returns to the news division that he ran for eight years. During that time, he helped lead its biggest shows to the top of network TV ratings, while also overseeing the rise of Williams within the organization.

Lack is scheduled to begin in April, with Williams's suspension up in August.
