What do you get when you buy Nest's $99 second-generation Protect smart smoke and carbon monoxide detector? Let's take a look.

The Protect 2.0 is more feature-packed than the original model. It's got a "Split-Spectrum Sensor" that can actually discern the difference between a slow- and fast-burning fire. The new Protect can also tell the difference between smoke and steam.

Additionally, the smart smoke/CO detector also supports gesture controls so you can wave your hand from underneath it to silence a warning alarm.

We'll have a full review soon, but for now, check out our unboxing video.

CORRECTION: The original story said the Nest Protect 2.0 supported hand gesture controls, but it actually does not.
