The PlayStation 3 will join an ever-increasing number of devices that support Netflix Watch Instantly streaming. Last year, Microsoft and Netflix announced a partnership that brought Netflix support to the X-Box 360.

How It Works

Netflix support on the X-Box 360 and on stand-alone players like the ROKU box, TiVo or Blu-ray players (like the LG BD-390) is typically software based, with the software hardwired into the system's BIOS or firmware.

The PlayStation 3 will initially work via an Instant Streaming Blu-ray disc that users will put in the PS3. As long as the system is connected to the Internet (using WiFi or Ethernet), users can then access their Netflix Instant Queues or browses for new titles to add via the PS3's Netflix interface.

How Much?

Netflix Streaming for the PS3 will be free -- provided you have a Netflix account with the $8.99 a month or higher plan. You can watch as many titles as you want from Netflix's growing selection of movies and TV shows. You can go ahead and request your disc now so that you'll be ready when the service launches in November.

PS3: Ultimate Media Center?

Now that the PlayStation 3 Slim has been released at a lower price-point, its Internet connectivity and streaming video options -- coupled with Blu-ray (and very good Blu-ray at that) make it a really compelling addition to an HD home theater system. With Netflix support, one of the most well-rounded Blu-ray players on the market (plus, it's a game system) looks like an even better value.
