One of the most exciting times to visit New Orleans is during the Mardis Gras season. French for Fat Tuesday, the celebration and cultural phenomenon falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent, the six-week period before Easter Sunday.

Mardis Gras this year brought out thousands of people to parade on the old cobblestone streets of New Orleans. The vibrant festival carries with it many traditions that includes electing a king of the Mardi Gras celebrations. Floats filled with revelers wearing colorful costumes add to a mix of beads, booze and feathers.

For some it’s a reason to rage before the beginning of Lent and a 40-day period of abstinence for Christians. For others it's just a reason to rage.
