LOS ANGELES -- Little by little, like the piecing together a frail and fraught cold-case, the tone and tenor of True Detective Season 2 is taking shape.

In the latest trailer from HBO, we see Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a California highway motorcycle patrolman (or perhaps he's impersonating one); Rachel McAdams as FBI agent Ani Bezzerides, who's apparently good with a knife; Colin Farrell's always-brooding Ray Velcoro; and more of Vince Vaughn's duplicitous -- and firebuggy, apparently -- Frank Semyon.

There are plenty of highway overpasses in this one, too, though we recently learned that the show is no longer about "the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system."

This trailer gives us only one clue about Season 2's premise: a missing girl, who no one seems to care about. So that's at least one element that will ring familiar from the inaugural installment.
