With one inmate dead and another back in police custody, authorities are learning more about what Richard Matt and David Sweat had planned following their daring escape from an upstate New York prison.

They're also learning what, exactly, happened to them while they were on the run for three weeks.

During an interview on WNYC's "The Capitol Pressroom" program, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo outlined some information officials had gleaned from Sweat following his arrest.

Among the pieces they got were that Sweat and Matt had originally planned to head for Mexico before their alleged accomplice, prison tailor Joyce Mitchell, backed out. Additionally, the pair had apparently split earlier last week as Matt was ill and slowing down Sweat.

Cuomo told WNYC, "When Mitchell doesn't show up, the Mexico plan gets foiled and then they head north towards Canada. And Sweat disengaged from Matt about five days ago, which answers why there was no DNA of Sweat at the last cabin they were in or the previous cabin... Sweat felt that Matt was slowing him down."

Part of the DNA discovery police had made were bloody socks belonging to Matt, Cuomo said.

Meanwhile, the FBI has launched an investigation into Clinton Correctional Facility, citing the possibility of wider corruption.

As for how the inmates survived on the run, ABC News took a look at a camper believed to have housed Matt for a few days before he was shot and killed last Friday.

Sweat was reportedly found with a bag stuffed full of maps, tools, bug spray and Pop-Tarts.

His condition was reported as "critical but stable," though it has changed frequently since his capture Sunday afternoon. In a statement, Albany Medical Center said, "As of Monday morning (June 29), his condition has been upgraded to serious, reflecting an improvement from his condition Sunday night."
