Thousands of costumed revelers paraded up Sixth Avenue during the annual Village Halloween Parade in New York City.

It was elbow-to-elbow at times as onlookers and participants in the parade—which was started in the 1970s—swarmed the packed route through Greenwich Village.

The grand marshal of the night, Whoopi Goldberg, was decked out in shades of pink and purple from head to toe, with a ring of roses around her neck—perhaps a nod to the parade’s theme, Garden of Earthly Delights. Goldberg’s granddaughter accompanied her dressed as a bumblebee, she said on Facebook.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

On the sidelines of the parade, parties were being had on apartment steps as music played throughout the event. Families flocked to the parade and some people brought along their dogs to take part in the Halloween celebrations, too.

For all its revelry, the parade has faced challenges in recent years. It was canceled in 2012 due to Superstorm Sandy and was on the chopping block last year until more than $50,000 was raised in a Kickstarter campaign.
