The paper of record is enduring massive backlash over a modification to a sacred food: guacamole.

"Add green peas to your guacamole. Trust us," the New York Times tweeted on Wednesday.

It's as if they knew that the backlash was coming. They expected it.

Before you could even say "avocado," much less read the reasoning of Times' food columnist Melissa Clark, people were outraged! Insulted! They clearly did not trust peas in their guacamole.

The advice, though, was coming from the woman who introduced the world to the deep-fried Twinkie (or so says her bio), so maybe -- just maybe -- we should give peas a chance.

Actually, nope. More than 150 of years of journalism, ruined with one tweet. Even President Barack Obama had to shut down the concept.

respect the nyt, but not buying peas in guac. onions, garlic, hot peppers. classic. https://t.co/MEEI8QHH1V— President Obama (@POTUS) July 1, 2015

Even Times staffers weighed in to distance themselves.

Clark quickly defended herself, blaming the New York City restaurant ABC Cocina for the concoction.

hey people, the peas in guacamole recipe is by @ABCCocina - I didn’t create it. And it’s delicious! @nytfood— melissa clark (@MelissaClark) July 1, 2015

But she stands by her guacamole modification.

However, it was too late. The damage is done.

The funny thing: I wrote about @ABCCocina’s #peaguacamole 2 years ago & no one peeped. Now, outrage. #dontknockittillyoutryit @nytfood— melissa clark (@MelissaClark) July 1, 2015
