Versions of the show have been broadcast in around 50 regions over 12 years, but on Monday, the Next Top Model franchise crowned its first ever transgender winner.

Loiza Lamers, a 20-year-old hairdresser and makeup artist, won Holland's Next Top Model's eighth season.

Once she had made it to the top 13 finalists, Lamers announced on the show that she had undergone sex reassignment surgery.

"I'm really at a point where I can say I am very proud to be transgender," Lamers told De Telegraaf.

While Lamers is the first transgender winner of any Next Top Model season, she is not the first to participate in the competition.

Isis King, 30, was the first transgender contestant, participating in cycle 11 of America's Next Top Model. King lived in an LGBTQ homeless center before catching the eye of Tyra Banks. She has since opened up the conversation about transgender models, appeared in magazines like Seventeen and Out, and more recently, on Teen Vogue.

Though America's Next Top Model recently announced its plans to cancel the show after 22 cycles, there are no immediate plans to end Holland's Next Top Model.
