NFL Mascot Apologizes for Insensitive Tweet About Suicide

We live in quite a world.

We live in a world where, thanks to Twitter, great swaths of humanity can communicate like never before. We live in a world where pro sports incite stratospheric levels of passion and dedication. We live in a world where pro-sports teams have mascots that dress up in goofy cartoon suits, and do bizarre things. We live in a world where those goofy mascots have Twitter accounts to broadcast their thoughts to the masses.

It all makes for something of a perfect storm, as recently proved by one Freddie Falcon.

Freddie is the mascot for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, which are struggling through the current season with a record of 2-6.

Freddie recently attended a walk sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention as one of his regularly schedule promotional appearances. After the walk, he posted a since-deleted message to his 6,500 Twitter followers that read:

Had a good time at the #ood suicide prevention walk today. I may need to go back if our season continues the way it is.

A few hours later, he posted this apology:

I am truly sorry for my inappropriate and insensitive tweet. It was in poor taste.— Freddie Falcon (@FreddieFalcon) November 4, 2013

In response, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention released the following statement:

For the more than 1,000 survivors of suicide loss who participated in today's walk, suicide prevention is no laughing matter. We hope everyone who joined us today, including Freddie, support our vision for a world without suicide.
