No Doubt, Jay Z, Carrie Underwood and other musical acts took to Central Park in New York City on Saturday for the 3rd annual Global Citizen Festival.
The free event is part of the Global Poverty Project, which aims to end extreme poverty by 2030, by increasing the number of people working for the cause.
"We believe that music transcends boundaries and languages and serves as an outlet for raising awareness around the issues that face everyone," the group said on its website. "Through music, we have an opportunity to reach millions with the message that we can end extreme poverty by 2030.
In 1990, 36% of people in the world lived in extreme poverty, which means living on the edge of subsistence with less than $1.25 per day. By next year, that statistic is set to drop to 12%, said Jim Young Kim, president of the World Bank before Jay Z rounded out the concert.
"For the first time in the history of mankind, we can be the generation that ends extreme poverty," he said, before posing with No Doubt and Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations.
