B&N CEO: We Hit a 'Wow Price Point' With $269 Nook HD+ [VIDEO]

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch is gearing up for a very interesting holiday season. His company just unveiled two brand-new HD content-consumption tablets: the Nook HD and the Nook HD+. One of those products, the 9-inch Nook HD+ competes directly with the tablet market’s most dominant product: The Apple iPad.

We asked Lynch, in an interview on the day he introduced us to Barnes and Noble’s new gadgets, about the decision to go after Apple and why neither of the Nook HD tablets includes a camera.

Lynch called the Apple iPad and expensive product and thinks his 16GB HD+ is a “wow price point” at $269. He contends that “below $600 there’s been nothing that’s been of high quality at a more accessible price.” Barnes & Noble proudly touts the pixel density on the smaller HD+ display, which is 256 pixels per inch, even though the iPad maintains the resolution and ppi (at 326) lead.

While the two Barnes & Noble Nook HD tablets are less expensive than competing devices from Apple and Amazon, which just rolled out new HD Kindle Fires, the company did leave out a camera to manage the price points. Both Amazon's Kindle Fire's and the Apple iPad feature at least one camera. For its part, Amazon subsidizes the prices of its tablets with sleep-state ads.

The bookseller CEO also characterized the new and smaller Nook HD as “hands-down the best 7-inch tablet.”
