Barnes & Noble announced on Tuesday it will start shipping its new Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets later this week.

Customers who already pre-ordered the devices online or in stores will be the first to receive the product. The tablets will also hit shelves at retailers such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy later this week.

The company announced the 7-inch Nook HD and 9-inch Nook HD+ as its new lightweight, affordable tablets last month. Barnes & Noble aims to take on competitors such as the iPad and Kindle Fire HD.

The lightweight Nook HD touts a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a high-resolution screen (1440 x 900), while the 9-inch Nook HD+ includes 1.5GHz of processing power.

The 7-inch tablet comes in two colors, "Snow" and "Smoke," and is priced at $199 (8GB) and $229 (16GB), while the HD+ version is available only in "Slate" for $269 (16GB) and $299 (32GB).
