This week, we're challenging you to combine common objects with your creativity to make unique works of art. Transform orange slices into bicycle wheels or turn hammers and wrenches into arms and legs. Take inspiration from household items, office tools and even your snack pantry.

Our host will be Christoph Niemann, an artist who has made a name for himself in this style. You can find him at @abstractsunday on Instagram.

"It actually started as a creative exercise," Niemann said about blending objects with his drawings. "I believe that the really good stuff happens in the process. You start with a certain notion, and as you begin to draw, you realize that things don’t up as you had planned, but instead something unexpected happens instead."

Niemann regularly illustrates covers for the New Yorker and does work for other editorial brands. He has especially loved being a part of the online Instagram community for the last few years. "It's a thrilling thought to be so closely connected to the people I actually create my images for," he said.

Tips from Niemann

There really are no rules. Just start drawing! Often, I have some stupid ideas in my head. I let them out, and then my mind can start thinking about the more interesting stuff.

Think beyond the obvious. For example, I know that an upside-down lightbulb looks like a pear. While these ideas will work they are never really surprising. It gets much more interesting when you look at odd angles.

Use your camera or iPhone to compose these new angles, and take a ton of photos. Often times, it is a random shot that is impossible to recreate later that proves to be the strongest.

Niemann will choose his favorite submissions early next week, and we'll feature them on our site. To enter, share your photos by Sunday, June 21 at 8 p.m. ET using the hashtag #MashPics_DoodleAround.
