When you've worked in an office for long enough, you start to pick up on the hidden meanings behind common sayings.

Depending on tone and inflection, "How was your weekend?" could mean either "How was your weekend?" or "I know you were arrested. Everybody knows." Picking up on the subtle differences is a skill only learned with time.
