With 2,871 athletes participating and only 98 gold medals up for grabs, most Olympians will go home without the coveted souvenir in their suitcase. And fewer than 10 percent of participants will leave Sochi with any medal at all.
If you've dedicated your life to become the best in your sport and fail to earn a gold medal in your Olympic event, you're going to feel a bit disappointed. Okay, you'll probably feel very disappointed. Sometimes even a silver medal can feel like a soul-crushing failure in the moment of defeat.
