Boy band One Direction on Thursday night won the MTV Video Music Awards moonman for Most-Share Worthy Video, which pay homage to video parodies, lip-dubs, remixes and covers.

Fans voted more than 50 million times for the nominees using Twitter hashtags and got to see what was winning in real time, creating a heated competition. One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” just edged out Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend.” Others vying for the crown were Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” and Beyonce’s “Countdown."

The new category is just one addition MTV has thrown into its digital arsenal for the VMAs.
