The answer appears to be: A lot. The study also found that about 7 percent of all streams rebuffer at least once during playback, and 2.5 percent rebuffer twice. The sample size included both short and long streams from 2- to 10-minute online clips to full TV shows.

Beyond sending a message to content sites and their content delivery networks (CDNs) that eliminating buffer times might be an important issue to tackle, the study also sends a message to advertisers: If you've got a post-roll running on a video network with high buffering rates, your marketing efforts are frequently not being seen at all.
