Open Web Awards Finalists: Social Bookmarking and Social News

Unlike some of the other categories in the Open Web Awards, the social bookmarking and social news nominations played out according to form, with the three best-known names in the space making the list of finalists. Now it's your turn to select who you think should take home the hardware. The nominees:

Digg has had quite a year. First, there was controversy over the company removing a story containing an HD-DVD encryption key. Then, there was some fuss when Digg launched a bunch of social networking features. The social news site finally added an image section in recent weeks which appeased many, but now the company appears to be moving towards a sale. Nonetheless, it remains number one in the space and has been voted a finalist.

Now a part of Wired, Reddit seems to have maintained a strong presence as one of the most visited social bookmarking sites. The site has maintained a very clutter-free interface, while launching a number of different news channels such as entertainment, sports, and gadgets.

Being “stumbled” has become a major treat for web publishers, as it results in a huge surge of traffic. The company behind it, StumbleUpon, has had a big year, being acquired by eBay for an estimated $40 million. As for the company’s algorithm that determines what sites get the pop, some researchers claim to have de-coded it.
