From the creators of BOXSTr, a file-hosting and backup solution, comes a new cloud-based storage solution called OpenDrive. Presently in public beta mode, OpenDrive acts much like a typical redundancy device, but its downloadable software utility connects your local life to the Web more fluidly, with an especially smart syncing feature.

As explained in the first minutes of the video shown above, OpenDrive recognizes which files are stored on your local machine and synonymously in your online account, and when edits are made on your own hard disk and subsequently saved, those changes can be registered automatically via OpenDrive. This is definitely a plus, given that most management of duplicate files is rarely synchronized so immediately. Normally one would have to manually perform transfers, or perhaps schedule an update.

The process employed by OpenDrive appears quite intuitive, and users seeking to optimize productivity and minimize the busy work of backup or file sharing among a collaborative group of people will probably appreciate the service. Yet there are two major points to raise. First, OpenDrive, as it is just now opening its doors for any and all interested users, advertises a free storage limit of 1GB. That is a markedly smaller allowance when juxtaposed against the amount of free space in BOXSTr. The designers of both services do mention that people already registered with BOXSTr will not have to do so again for OpenDrive, however. Also worth noting is that OpenDrive manages data via the Web through BOXSTr until a unique GUI is established for OpenDrive.
