Opera has developed this functionality together with Skyhook Wireless, using their Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS). This means that you don't need to have a GPS-enabled device in order to share your location; any Wi-Fi-enabled device will do. The possible implementations of this technology include local search, location-based social networking, geotagging photographs and videos and the like. The important thing is that the geolocation part is happening entirely on the user side, and therefore the user can choose whether or not he wants to participate.
