Orange UK Sold 30,000 iPhones on Launch Day

Well, this definitely puts Verizon's 100,000 sold Droids on its first weekend into perspective: Orange UK has announced it has sold 30,000 iPhones on the first day of launch.

As Orange's comms team man Conor Maples tweeted after the launch, "Orange UK had sold more than 30k iPhones, smashing what we believe is the previously published first day sales records for a phone in the UK!"

Think about it: iPhone (in its various iterations) has been around for over 2 years; it's been present in the UK since 2007, and Orange still managed to sell 30,000 units on the first day. Take into account that Droid is a completely new device, and US is a much bigger market, and 100,000 units suddenly sounds rather puny.

However, it doesn't mean that 100,000 sold units is bad; it only goes on to show how flabbergastingly huge iPhone is. Let's add some perspective to these numbers. To be fair, one should compare Droid's 100,000 to iPhone's original launch day. And though iPhone still wins the battle - around 270,000 units were sold in the first 30 hours - Droid fares much better in that comparison.
