LOS ANGELES -- Though Alfonso Cuarón's space epic Gravity dominated the 86th Academy Awards with seven wins in the 24 categories, Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave secured the ceremony's biggest honor, Best Picture.

12 Years a Slave beat out 288 other films that were eligible for Best Picture. The film came out in October 2013, building a groundswell of support by moviegoers and critics alike for its emotional tale of Solomon Northup' struggle for survival in a pre-Civil War United States.

"Everyone fell in line to tell the story," Brad Pitt, who played an abolitionist in 12 Years, said backstage to press alongside director Steve McQueen.

The film also won Best Adapted Screening and Best Supporting Actress.
