Creating a social network based on a TV show isn't totally new: the UK reality TV show Shipwrecked is auditioning contestants via a network called Islandoo, while the UK's Big Brother will do a similar thing. Now Showtime's drama "The L Word" is set to launch a social network for its lesbian viewership, their friends and their families.

OurChart.com, which will launch in January, is based on a chart in the series created by the character Alice, which maps her relationships. The idea is spin this off into a full-blown social network, allowing users to create profile pages and maintain their own charts. Over time, they plan to weaken the link between the social network and the show. Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey - three of the cast members - are among the founders, while CBS's Showtime Networks is a part of the joint venture.
