11 places to catch a movie outdoors in the UK this summer

LONDON -- The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and it's beginning to feel like summertime.

What better way is there to relax than to watch a movie in the great outdoors? From giant bean bags in Shoreditch to camping outside a castle in Cumbria there are dozens of pop-up outdoor cinemas in various locations across the UK over the summer months showing screening cult classics, Oscar winners and newer releases.

Here are 11 places to catch an outdoor movie this summer.

Muncaster Castle, Cumbria

The Picnic Cinema will be showing Blues Brothers and Psycho after dark on August 14 and August 15 on the front lawn of Muncaster Castle, a privately-owned estate with views of the Esk Valley and mountains. There will be camping pitches on the castle's grounds for film goers and glamping options available. Tickets from £15, more information here.

Shoreditch, London

With the exception of the giant bean bags, this pillow cinema event on a rooftop in Shoreditch is BYO. With dates between June 20 and July 5, there's a programme of films to suit most people's tastes from Whiplash to Ex Machina and Clueless to The Notebook. Tickets from £12.35, more information here.

Reading Water, Reading

Making a stop on its tour of the waterways of the South East and West of England, the Floating Cinema barge will moor in Reading for Reading Water Fest 2015 between June 13 and June 14. Admission is free, but space is limited so booking is needed. More information here.

Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh

Luna Cinema, known for its productions at Kensington Palace and Ascot Racecourse, will be in Edinburgh at the Royal Botanic Gardens in September where it will screen Back to the Future, Mamma Mia and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Regular and premium tickets are available for the cinema under the stars with screenings beginning at 7.45 p.m. More information here.

West Quadrangle, University of Glasgow, Glasgow

Sci-fi fans will be delighted with the pop-up cinema in Glasgow, which is screening The Matrix and District 9 on June 4 and 5. Proceeds from the £10 admission will go to leukaemia research. And don't forget it's BYOS (bring your own seat!). More information here.

Hot Tub Cinema, Bristol

Hot Tub Cinema has returned to Bristol combining that classic combination of hot tubs and movies for six nights from June 3 before heading to Manchester for three nights from Jun 12. There are 20 hot tubs at each screening with room for 120 people. The idea, which started out in Exeter in 2006 and launched in London in 2012, popped up in New York and Ibiza last year. As well as Hot Tub Time Machine, The Hangover and Labyrinth are on the Bristol schedule. Tickets from £21.50, more information here.

Belfast City Hall, Belfast

Belfast Film Festival is hosting screenings at Belfast City Hall from July 3 to 5 with classics like Hitchcock's 1944 film Lifeboat and John Huston's The African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. There are afternoon and evening showings and the best part is admission is free, more information here.

Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire

Relax in the gardens of an Elizabethan house and watch The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies at one of the Summer Nights Film Festival happenings between August 21 and August 22. Sitting on a hill, Hardwick Hall has spectacular views of the local countryside. More information here.

Brindleyplace Film Festival, Birmingham

The annual and free outdoor film festival returns to Central Square in Bridleyplace in July with its bean bags and blankets in tow for a fourth year. It hasn't released its programme yet as that will be decided by the public from a long list of films, with everything from cult high school flick Ten Things I Hate About You to Oscar-winner The Theory of Everything in the running for the final cut. Brighton beach, Brighton

With a beach bar where you can grab a drink before the movie begins, Brighton's Big Screen is returning from August 14 until September 13 next to the famous pier and big wheel. As well as showing The Goonies to celebrate the cult classic turning 30, there are also screenings of Interstellar, Guardians of the Galaxy and a sing-along version of Frozen. Daytime screenings are free with tickets for evening shows starting at £3. More details here.

Hatfield Forest, Essex

The forest owned by the National Trust will play host to outdoor screenings of films such Dirty Dancing from August 21 to August 23. People are encouraged to bring their own fold-up chairs, cushions and blankets and to dress for the weather. Tickets from £7, more information here.
