PaidWiki Aims to be Commercial Wikipedia

PaidWiki is a new service that aims to be Wikipedia with one big difference: it’s a commercial site. For $49, you get the rights to a specified wiki page on their site, for example “Harry Potter.” You will then own that page and control 50% of the ad inventory on it, and also earn a bonus when new people create pages via your affiliate link.

As for the software, it appears to be a tweaked version of WordPress that allows you to create and maintain your wiki pages. Other features include the ability to rate a wiki page (1-5 stars) and see a list of related pages. At the moment there are only a handful of pages on the site, including one for Mashable.

While PaidWiki seems like it could potentially be profitable for people if the site were to take off, I think the big hurdle will be that there is no incentive for anyone other than the owner to contribute to a wiki page. Wikipedia took off in part because of its strong non-commercial nature – PaidWiki is the complete opposite. For those interested in making money off of their knowledge, services like Squidoo and Mahalo seem like a better bet.
