It's the end of an era. Palm has announced on its blog today that it will no longer be providing Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to its customer in order to install and run Java applications and games on their devices. The doomsday comes Jan. 12, 2008. While JVM will still be supported on Palm's website, it will not be offering version upgrades and software downloads.
This is kind of a big deal on two fronts. As Palm still has a decent amount of market share in the handheld device arena, it's abandoning of JVM means that a lot of applications will no longer be supported for use. Several mobile applications and games are in fact built in JVM, so it may be a disheartening blow to those that are still avid Palm users to hear that JVM will no longer be supported.
