This bridge is made out of paper and nothing else

Believe it or not, this five metre, bright red bridge is made purely of paper.

The construction, which arches over a stream in the Grisedale Valley, Patterdale, in the Lake District, uses no glue, bolts or other fixings and yet can withstand the weight of a man (and his dog).

It even gets stronger when it rains.

PaperBridge is an outdoor art installation created by artist Steve Messam, open to the public until May 18.

It comprises 22,000 sheets of paper, made at Cumbria's Burneside Mill and carefully packed together over a wooden frame which was subsequently removed.

It will be sent back to the mill for recycling once the installation is complete.

The bridge was inspired by other temporary constructions, including Tokyo architect Siguru Ban's cardboard bridge in France. However, Messam's structure doesn't rely on fixings and instead rests on "vernacular architectural principles as used in drystone walls and the original pack-horse bridges that dot the Lake District," he says.

"The idea for the bridge came out of a conversation with paper manufacturers about four years ago and has just stuck in my head since then," Messam told Mashable. He built several test versions before settling on the final version. "I built lots of models over the years to fine-tune bits and double-check the maths," he said.

Messam was the first to walk over the finished construction.

"It swayed more than I thought it would, but after a night of heavy rain it's all locked together better now and is a lot more stable," he said. "There's just a little movement now. It's also a long way down when you stand on it."
