Pepsi's Vending Machine Lets You Give Drinks to Friends

Vending machine technology is slowly adapting to the social media age. The latest innovation is a new machine from PepsiCo that lets consumers gift drinks to friends.

As the video above outlines, you can play a game to win a free drink and then email a code to a friend. The recipient can then enter the code at one of the vending machines to claim his or her gift.

However, if your friend isn't near one of the five U.S. malls -- in Columbia, S.C.; Happy Valley, Ore.; Savannah, Ga.; Eau Claire, Wisc.; and Lancaster, Pa. -- then they're out of luck.

If the idea sounds familiar, it is. This is Pepsi's second-generation version of a gift-giving vending machine. Pepsi announced the 1.0 version of its "Social Vending Machine" last April. Meanwhile, arch rival Coca-Cola won a Mobile Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions ad festival in June for a program that let people gift Cokes to people at four machines in New York, Buenos Aires, Cape Town and Mountain View, Calif.
