This combined company will be known as Photobucket Corporation. News Corp., which acquired Photobucket in 2007, will hold a significant equity stake in the new company. The merger will meld Photobucket's brand with Ontela's software, which is currently in use on more than 30 wireless carriers worldwide.

It's really interesting to see how mobile phones have transformed the camera market. Low-end standalone digital cameras have become virtually displaced by mobile phones. And why not? Today's smartphones can offer acceptable quality (sometimes even great quality), plus the ability to e-mail, upload to Flickr, Facebook or other services, and the ability to transfer back to a home computer for touch-ups or prints.
