In April 1968, riots devastated Baltimore in the wake of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. More than four decades later, riots devastated Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray.

The 1968 riots lasted from April 6 to April 14 and ended in six fatalities, 700 injuries, and the destruction of 1,000 businesses, according to MSNBC.

The cover of TIME this week features a black and white photo that pays homage to the similarities of images from the two riots. Photos from 1968 show the looting, destruction, violence and chaos--even the National Guard patrolling the streets-- that also befell recent events.
