A peaceful protest in Ferguson, Missouri, marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown turned violent and chaotic late Sunday night. The situation between demonstrators and police became tense as night fell and, in late evening, gunshots rang out, sending protesters, media, and police scattering for cover.

Several dozen shots were fired between two groups on West Florissant Avenue around 11 p.m. local time, not far from where demonstrators were locked in a vocal but non-violent standoff with police. When a group of police came under fire, they shot back, striking and injuring 18-year-old Tyrone Harris.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said after the shooting, "While this is a tragedy for the family of this man, and the officers involved, there is a small group of people out there that have the intent to make sure peace does not prevail."

More protests were scheduled for Monday, which activists dubbed a "day of civil disobedience."
