In 2007, Captain Erik Rue of Calcasieu Charter Service made a discovery usually reserved for children's wallpaper and Lisa Frank notebooks: a pink baby bottlenose dolphin.
Nicknamed "Pinky," Rue tells WGNO that he's spotted the dolphin hundreds of times over the past 8 years, swimming along in Calcasieu Lake in Louisiana.
So, where does Pinky get her pastel hue? According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, she happens to be one of just three albino dolphins spotted in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1994, an all-white dolphin was spotted in Little Lake
in New Orleans, Louisiana, and in 2003 another all-white dolphin was spotted swimming in Galveston, Texas.
Though Pinky was first spotted swimming alongside her grey-hued mother, Rue says she's often seen swimming alone. Rue tells WGNO that he believes he's seen Pinky mating, and wonders if she might be pregnant with a baby dolphin of her own.
For now, we're content knowing that at least one dreamy pink dolphin exists beyond our imaginations.
